What is the Georgia Super Speeder Law?

What is the Georgia Super Speeder Law?

For interstates and highways in Georgia, the average speed limit ranges from 65 to 70 miles per hour. Although those speeds can keep traffic flowing smoothly, speeding tickets are still a common problem and authorities take violations very seriously. Speeding convictions that fall under the Georgia Super Speeder law can be costly and can result in a license suspension. Here’s what you should know if you receive this fine notification.

Georgia Super Speeder Law

Georgia law O.C.G.A. §40-6-189, known as the Georgia Super Speeder law, applies to those drivers ticketed for speeding 75 mph or more on a two-lane road or 85 mph on a highway or interstate. Although these speeding convictions are similar to other traffic violations, the fines and penalties are much higher

Fines

Like all other traffic violations, drivers must face a court and are subject to all fees and penalties distributed at their hearing. Those defined as Super Speeders must also pay a $200 fee directly to the state of Georgia.

Declaration of a Super Speeder

In typical speeding ticket situations, authorities provide drivers with their citation information upfront. Super Speeders will receive additional fine information from the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS). The DDS alerts drivers of their Super Speeder violations and will deliver a notice to the address listed on their driver’s licenses. Once this is received, drivers have 120 days to respond and pay their fines. Unfortunately, if your address is not correct on your ID, the DDS will assume you are refusing to pay and you could have your license suspended without your knowledge.

Out of State Drivers

Georgia Super Speeder laws still apply to drivers that do not live within the state. Like in-state drivers, you will still receive a notice of your Super Speeder violation and have three months to respond. If your fine goes unpaid, the DDS can suspend your license in Georgia and report the suspension to your home state. As a result, you could lose your license in multiple states.
