Andersen, Tate & Carr, P.C. Attorney Tyler Dillard Helps Coach Grady High School to Mock Trial State Championship

Duluth, GA - Andersen, Tate & Carr, P.C. attorney Tyler Dillard helps coach the Henry W. Grady High School Mock Trial Team. Tyler coaches with his wife Caroline McGlamry; lead attorney coach Carl Gebo; teacher coach Andrew Copeland and Alison Earles. Tyler has been involved with the team since 2015 and typically attends three practices per week helping the team for competition. On Saturday, March 4, 2017, the team won the State Mock Trial Championship held at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center. The team also won the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism Award and several individual students received outstanding attorney and outstanding witness awards. The Georgia High School Mock Trial Competition began in 1988. Students compete as either Attorneys or Witnesses in Civil or Criminal Trials against squads from other schools. Those competition rounds are evaluated by actual attorneys and judges who score the teams' performances based on the authenticity and persuasiveness of the team's presentation of the facts and legal arguments. In 2017, 95 high school teams participated in the Competition. All teams first competed in Regional competitions, after which the top 48 teams advanced to District competitions. From there, the top 8 teams advanced to the State competition. This year’s win marked the seventh State Championship for Grady High School since the year 2000. The team also finished 3rd in the State at last year’s competition. Tyler plans to continue coaching the team through May, at which time it will compete in the National High School Mock Trial Competition, which this year will be held in Hartford, Connecticut. Tyler contributes the team’s success to the talents and hard work of the students and lead coach, Carl Gebo. When Tyler was in high school, he too competed in Mock Trial for four years serving as a student attorney each year. Tyler says that his goal was to always win the State competition, but that it never happened as a student. Tyler says he is “extremely proud of the Team’s accomplishment, and is very glad to have played a small part in helping a team achieve a State title.” The Grady High School Mock Trial Foundation's mission is to use the context of competitive high school mock trial to foster the development of students' critical thinking skills, public speaking ability, work ethic, and self-confidence in a team environment. The Foundation supports the creation, development, and expansion of a dynamic and fun learning environment and experience in which students can develop life skills useful to pursuing excellence and mastery in any area or discipline.
